Understanding Trauma

The word trauma is often associated with seriously dangerous and/or life-threatening experiences. However, like physical trauma, psychological trauma ranges in severity based on a variety of factors. One of many considerations is the extremity of the traumatic event. Another is how much trauma a person has experienced in the past or continues to be exposed to. For some, trauma leaves a small bruise easily healed over time. Others experience more severe symptoms that adversely impact many parts of their daily lives. When unresolved, trauma’s psychological wounds may develop into a condition known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Identifying  PTSD   Symptoms

PTSD develops from unhealed or prolonged trauma. When left unresolved, PTSD symptoms can become severe, and they may include:

Frightening dreams that may or may not be directly related to the traumatic experience. Flashbacks are like daydreams that make the individual feel like they are experiencing a traumatic event again.

Feeling detached or isolated or taking steps to distance themselves from loved ones. They may lose interest in favorite activities. This may also lead to avoidance if a person takes steps to remove themselves from situations where they’re concerned PTSD may be triggered.

Impulsiveness, promiscuity, substance misuse, self-harm, and other destructive behaviors may be used to numb or avoid the feelings of trauma response.

Being short-tempered or irritable, including poor management of anger and stress are common.

Feeling always on alert and expecting something bad to happen even in relatively safe situations. This may present as increased anxiety or even paranoia.

Situational physiological response like elevated heart rate, sweating, and trembling may occur when exposed to a triggering situation. Additionally, elevated blood pressure, chronic headaches, and other health concerns may continue long-term.

Benefits of Therapy for PTSD

Without therapy, the effects of PTSD are likely to get worse with time. Therapy provides a safe space to process and heal following trauma, including offering the tools to alleviate the adverse effects of PTSD. During initial therapy sessions, your counselor will work with you to develop a plan to alleviate the impact of PTSD symptoms and begin to process trauma. Overtime, you’ll reestablish a sense of safety and stability, so you can experience greater satisfaction in daily life.
